Currently, only a few private hospitals in the state offer the facility. GMC’s genetic OPD is expected to begin operations once the Covid-19 pandemic ebbs further. Its launch was deferred due to the deadly second wave and also because the consultant wasn’t able to come to Goa due to travel restrictions.
A senior GMC official said children with genetic disorders, or couples desiring to be parents but having a family history of genetic issues, will be able to seek consultation.
He further said that while educated couples are more likely to seek consultation over genetic issues prior to planning a family, those without resources may not. “The new OPD will be of help to all sections of society,” he said.
